The evidence type drop list is specific to the evidence category.  Also note the create description button.  Once the details about the evidence item is entered a property description is created by clicking this button.  Again this is designed to expedite entry and reduce data entry errors.

Also there is a copy and paste function for the item for items that are like in nature.  This is a great feature when cataloging evidence for court presentation and documentation.
